    Frequently asked questions
How is your salt made?
Amagansett Sea Salt is made entirely by hand. We collect seawater from the Atlantic Ocean, pass it through a multi-stage filtering process, and then solar-evaporate the filtered seawater outdoors in open-air salt pans. We "cultivate" the seawater like the soil, adding more when necessary, covering it before it rains, or snows, or when a heavy dew is expected. When the time is right, we harvest the salt crystals by hand, put them through exhaustive hand-cleaning and screening processes, and finally package the salt for sale.
Where do you make the salt?
Every step in the process-from gathering seawater, to evaporating it into salt, to packing and shipping the finished product-takes place in Amagansett, a small hamlet near the tip of Long Island, in New York USA.
When will I get my order?
We work quickly to ship your order as soon as possible. Once your order has shipped, you will receive an email with further information. Delivery times vary depending on your location.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping is calculated based on your location and the items in your order. You will always know the shipping price before you purchase.
How should the salt be stored?
Because salt is hydrophilic and wants to absorb moisture and since we refuse to add desiccants or anti-caking agents as other saltmaker do, please keep Amagansett Sea Salt in a sealed jar when not being used (our glass jar with the cork on is great). A dark location will help the fresh and vibrant colors of our infused and flavored salt blends last longer.
What is your carbon footprint?
Zilch, nada, rien, nothing (except for general lighting and transportation). Unlike most modern-day salt makers, we make sea salt in the traditional manner outdoors using only the sun, wind, and patience. No boiling, no ovens, no kilns, no heat lamps for us!
What is your return policy?
All of our salts are carefully hand-crafted and intended for human consumption. To safeguard the health and safety of our customers, we cannot accept returns or exchanges on any salt products. All sales of salt are final. If you believe we sent the wrong item, or if there’s another issue with your order, please contact us at info@amagansettseasalt.com within 30 days of receipt. While we can’t accept returned salt, we’ll review the situation and do our best to make things right.
You may view our complete refund and policy can be found here.
Can I purchase your salt in person?
While we don’t have a physical storefront, you can find a selection of our salts in many wonderful shops in Amagansett and around the country. Pease visit the Stockist page on our website for a list of brick and mortar retailers. Note that retailers offer a selection of our salts that they curate, and we cannot guarantee availability at any specific salt at any specific store at any given time.
How about tours? Can I visit you to see how it's done?
We host chefs, restaurant teams, and commercial food makers with whom we have established relationships at our saltworks. These visits are a two-way exchange—they allow us to get to know our professional clients better and pick their brains while giving them a deeper understanding of our salt, the process behind it, and a peek into our proprietary methods. At this time, we do not offer public tours or visits to our facility.
Our team collects seawater from the ocean in Amagansett (near Atlantic Avenue) most mornings around 7:00 AM year-round. You’re welcome to stop by the beach to meet some of our crew and chat about salt then. Since our schedule occasionally changes and we are heedful of the weather, tides, and ocean conditions, feel free to reach out the day before to confirm if we’ll be collecting water the following morning. If you do visit, please be mindful of local parking regulations.
